The Outer Corona & Prominences

Totality 12th August 2026 - near Burgos, Spain

The outer corona is the Sun’s thin, glowing atmosphere, which becomes visible during a total solar eclipse. It appears as a faint, white halo surrounding the dark Moon, with wispy streams of hot gas stretching far into space. Normally, the corona is hidden by the Sun’s bright surface, but during an eclipse the Moon blocks the sunlight, allowing me to capture it with my camera.

I used tracking to allow me to be able to take longer exposures, which helped capture more detail in the faint outer corona. This revealed the delicate, wispy structures extending further out from the Sun that would be difficult to see with a shorter exposure.

The red lines coming from the surface of the Sun are prominences. These are massive jets of cool plasma that shoot out from the surface, sometimes lasting for weeks. You can see them on 3 sides in this single exposure. To get an idea of size, the Earth would fit end to end 109 times across the sun here so I’d estimate between 3-6 Earths diameters for the size of these

4 x Earths = 31,600 miles
