Milky Way over Crummock
'Milky Way over Crummock'
The Milky Way arches across the skies over Crummock Water late one spring night. The mountains and hills of the lake district reflected in the mirror calm waters. Whiteside, Grasmoor, Whiteless Pike, Robinson & Rannerdale Knots lie under the arch and to the right High Stile, Red Pike, Haystacks and the mountains around Buttermere can be seen to the right of shot.
In the sky the galactic core of our Milky Way galaxy lies over Rannerdale, the core where 26,000 light years away lies a supermassive black hole 4 million times the mass of our sun. Scorpius can be seen over High Stile and to the left of this above Buttermere, Ophiuchus. Scutum above Rannerdale and the Great Rift above that. Moving left along the arch Aquila & Sagitta and the Cygnus, the Swan with the bright stars of Vega and Deneb. Lacerta & Cepheus next and below this, Cassiopeia, The Mother of Andromeda. Andromeda is our sister galaxy, contains a trillion stars and lies 2.537 million light years away. Its actually the most distant object visible to the naked eye and can be seen just above Whiteside. Perseus is visible just above the horizon and above this, the Double Cluster & Camelopardalis. The double cluster is actually two star clusters 7500 light years away containing 20,000 stars each.
Pretty amazing what you can see above the Lake District really isn't it
This is a brand new photo, taken last year but only just edited. I'm very happy with it and I think it shows how beautiful the night sky is above my beloved Lake District
