Lindisfarne MIlky Way Arch
Lindisfarne, also known as Holy Island is the first place the Vikings landed in 793 AD and is a special place to visit. With its causeway, you have to time your visit as it’s easy to get stuck on the island for a few hours. It’s a place I like to go and walk with my dogs and spend some time taking photographs and the skies can be stunning both by day & especially by night.
This is the famous Lindisfarne Castle under the arch of the MIlky Way. To the right you can see the top of the galactic core, the gas clouds at the heart of our galaxy. In the centre of this lies a supermassive black hole 26,000 light years away, with a mass of 4 million times that of our sun. A black hole we have names Sagittarius A*. To the left of the castle, under the MIlky Way arch you can also see our sister galaxy Andromeda, the most distant object visible to the naked eye from Earth. Andromeda is 2.537 million light years away and contains a trillion stars., In around 5 billion years our two galaxies will start to merge and over the next few billion years will form another even more massive galaxy! Mind blowing!
