Helvellyn Starscape
'Helvellyn Starscape'
A multi shot panorama of the sky above Helvellyn one March night. A great night spent with my dog Red & pal Tom Kay Photographic. We legged it up after sunset and spent the night on the taking photos and having a natter. I love to be alone with my thoughts, dogs & camera most of the time but sometimes its nice to share it with a good pal & obviously its safer to be with someone while climbing around mountains at night.
Above the trig point you can just see Ullock PIke & Skiddaw and to the right of this, Blencathra. The lights you can see in the distance to the right of Blencathra come from Carlisle the the mast at Skelton, then Penrith. Ullswater is centre shot in the distance and Red tarn can be seen with mirror calm reflections of the sky. Catstye Cam, Swirral Edge & the iconic Striding edge lie just below the summit and beyond them Raise & Stybarrow Dodd.
In the sky you can see some airglow above the low cloud & haze covering the Pennines & North Cumbria and above this a sky full of stars with the winter Milky Way arching down over White Side, Watsons Dodd & Great Dodd. The lights of Keswick can be seen behind the Trig point and above this, our sister galaxy Andromeda, the most distant object visible to the naked eye. It lies 2.537 million light years away and contains a trillion stars. Above this, The Double Cluster, 2 massive star clusters, each containing around 20,000 stars and shining from 7,500 light years away. You can also see the gas clouds towards the centre of our Milky Way galaxy with Cassiopeia towards the top and Cygnus just poking out from the horizon.
Another beautiful night in Cumbria
