Helvellyn Milky Way Arch
Helvellyn Milky way Arch
The Winter Milky Way arches across the skies above the Lake District and the summit of Helvellyn in the middle of a spring night. Snow clings to the summit and the stars can be seen reflected in Red Tarn. The ridges of Striding Edge & Swirral Edge lead down towards Glenridding and Ullswater beyond. The lakeside road can been made out by the light trails from cars and beyond this, the lights of Penrith can be seen. Right of this, low cloud over the Pennines and to the left, the lights of Carlisle and the mast at Skelton. Left of this Blencathra & Skiddaw can be seen with the lights of Anthorn just visible.
In the sky you can see one of winters wonder, the Milky Way arching across the sky in a beautiful arch. This is only possible in late winter, early spring due to how the constellations moves through the night sky. I had probably climbed Helvellyn 8 times before I managed to capture this shot. On the far right, the top of Sagittarius can be in front of the top of the core of our galaxy. Above this you can see Aquila and in the centre of the arch, Cygnus. Left of this, Cassiopeia (Mother of Andromeda) can be seen and it points to our sister galaxy Andromeda which is the most distant object visible to the naked eye and lies 2.537 million light years away. Perseus and Auriga can be seen far left.
This is a multi shot panorama made up of 26 separate photographs taken at the same time of 20 seconds each
